Discussion:
synce-gnomevfs, AFAIK Nautilus, and depreciated gnomevfs

I upgraded to Hardy to find out that synce-gnomevfs does not work. I posted
a thread at ubuntu's forums and I get this reply:

AFAIK Nautilus doesn't use gnomevfs anymore, it was replaced by gvfs. So I
don't think you can make it work unless you install a synce backend for
gvfs.
So my question is, is synce fixing this or is it already in svn?

Thanks!

I brought up this in December [1] but unfortunately no one jumped at the
offer. Any takers this time?

Please add a bug to the bugtracker at Sourceforge [2] requesting GVFS
support.

I suggest a new module "synce-gvfs" but I suspect that there will be
some copying and pasting from synce-gnomevfs.

Cheers,

David

I added a bug but put it under the category of gnome-vfs. Should it have
gone under that or something else?

Thanks!

Hmm.....

Well, I can't find find any docs on how to implement a backend, even
vaguely, and there seems to be no exported api for building out-of-tree
backends anyway.

Might take a while.

I have Ubuntu Hardy Beta installed which is set for release in April. The version of nautilus it has apparently uses gvfs. All who upgrade to Hardy once it is released will not be able to use nautilus to access their ppcs.

I had a brief look at gvfs, but since it's not even in debian unstable
yet didn't think it would roll around that fast. Is this is current
ubuntu release, or are you playing withbleeding edge ?
I imagine it won't be too tricky, but it does look a bit different from
gnomevfs. Hopefully there are some good module writing guides (first
time for everything !)
