At last, synchronized with evolution- thanks Mark, this was impossible
without your assistance, especially the need for only a selection of
sync software from testing, avoiding opensync and raki, getting odccm
from unstable- finally an unexpected tweak to first evolution then
multisync did the job. I think I ought to produce a "howto" because this
process is not intuitive and the instructions aren't really accessible
to a beginner or perhaps even an intermediate Linux user. I'll post the
link when I have a draft.

One thing- is it necessary to run synce-serial-start from root? If the
user isn't the administrator this will be a problem.-Phil

Please do! Maybe you'd like to write it on the synce.org wiki?

Synce-serial is just bunch of scripts around pppd, so if you can run
make pppd run on /dev/ttyUSB0 without being root things should work.

Will do. I'll check pppd. Another issue I haven't tried to overcome is
file exchange; sd card is fine for me, although a windows user would
probably expect something like activesync (as I now know raki isn't
working, and there were problems with rapi). Is there a command to set
up file access?-Phil

Generally only root can bring up a network interface. A useful
technique is to bring up the network interface from udev/hotplug,
where scripts always run as root. Once it's up any user can connect
to it. I think there are some udev/hotplug scripts included in
synce-serial, if not I have some I can send along.

Hope this helps,

----Scott.

In the synce-serial README is some guidance on how to automate the
serial link.

Rapi is ok as far as I know, there is a standalone version in svn now.
Or gnomevfs if you want to use nautilus. There is also something called
FUR (i think, fuse using rapi ?, cant remember), to actually mount the
device as a filesystem.
